Turning “Sold Out” Frustration into Pre-Order Opportunity

Turning “Sold Out” Frustration into Pre-Order Opportunity

When a customer sees “currently unavailable” or “sold out” with no solution, that means only one thing: lost sale opportunity for your Shopify store.

When customers hit a dead-end product page with no path forward, most will bounce immediately and never return. For a Shopify merchant, popular products that frequently sell out are missed opportunities that represent significant lost revenue over time.

Below is a guide to 11 elements you can include on your product page to boost revenue even when the product is currently unavailable. Keep reading, because one of them is the Pre-Order button.

Let’s examine a real example from Tennessee Peanut Company’s popular Bayou Bites product. When we looked at the page in March 2025, it did not show a “Sold Out” status, its buttons did nothing, and there was no indication of when the product would return.

With no clear next steps, no reviews, and no way to capture interested customers, this page effectively tells shoppers: “Go somewhere else.”

Why this page fails customers:

This page creates multiple points of friction that drive customers away:

  • “Sold Out” is not prominently displayed on the page
  • Shop Pay button still appears but doesn’t function when clicked
  • “More payment options” leads nowhere
  • No indication of when the product will be back in stock
  • No way to be notified when available
  • The customer has no path forward except to leave disappointed
  • No way to capture potential customer information
  • Lost revenue opportunity for a clearly popular product

The pre-order transformation

Every “sold out” notice without a pre-order option is money walking out the door. Your marketing already did the hard work bringing customers to your page. They’re ready to buy, credit card in hand, and then they hit a dead end. Most will never return, even when you restock.

Pre-orders solve this problem by capturing that purchase intent immediately. They convert browsers into buyers at the exact moment of highest interest, and every order with a pre-order item lands in Shopify with the Pre-order tag, so you can filter your Shopify Orders and see exactly what to produce next.

Pre-orders soothe disappointed customers, and they’re also a powerful sales strategy that keeps cash flowing even when shelves are empty.

Here’s how Tennessee Peanut Company could transform lost opportunities:

1. Add a prominent “PRE-ORDER” badge

Set the badge copy in the Customer Experience with Pre-order that you assign to the product: on its Product page, turn on Enable badge under Pre-order badge, enter the Badge text and use Badge position to pick the product-image corner you want it in, then do the same under Collection page for the collection card. The pre-order button is what takes the place of the theme’s Add to Cart or Sold Out button, so shoppers get a way forward instead of a dead end, with the badge reinforcing it on the product image and the collection card.

To switch the pre-order button on, assign that Customer Experience to the sold-out variants from Products, keep When Pre-order shows on Only when out of stock, and enable the Timesact App Embed on the theme you publish (Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds), then click Save in the theme editor.

2. Product Title & Availability Status

Be specific with your product name, and let Timesact carry the pre-order wording and the expected shipping date: set the badge and button copy on the Customer Experience’s Product page, and put the date in the Pre-order message with the {{shippingDate}} variable, with an Exact date set under Shipping in the same Customer Experience’s Functionality settings so the storefront stays in sync.

3. Display quantity and price metrics:

Implement functional quantity buttons that update the total in real-time.

10oz Pouch: €8.95

18oz Family Size: €14.95

4. Pre-Order Options

Offering a deposit reduces purchase hesitation and makes higher-priced items more accessible during the waiting period. In Timesact this lives in the Customer Experience assigned to the variant: under Functionality settings, choose Split payment under Billing, set the First charge (a percentage or a fixed amount) that is charged at checkout, and under When to charge the rest choose when Shopify collects the balance: On a specific date, A set time after checkout or, on the PRO plan, When you fulfill the order. Split payments run through Shopify Payments and PayPal Express. Deposit 30%: the remaining balance is charged on March 20th.

5. Clear Pre-Order CTAs

Primary: [PRE-ORDER NOW] button prominently displayed

Secondary: Timesact’s Back in Stock “Notify Me” button, which runs on the same product page for shoppers who would rather get an email when the item returns

Keep your primary CTA in high-contrast colors. It is the main focus.

6. Prominent Restock Timeline

NEXT BATCH SHIPPING MAY 2ND, 2025 [Countdown Timer: 28 Days Remaining] Pre-order customers receive priority shipping from our first batch

Transparency builds trust. Be realistic about your timeline, communicate clearly about any changes, and make your customers feel valued.

7. Shipping Information Summary:

Optimize the area around your CTA with critical shipping details:

FLAT-RATE SHIPPING €3.95

  • Orders over €25 ship FREE
  • Pre-orders ship May 2nd, 2025
  • Typical delivery time: 2-4 business days
  • Order tracking provided via email

8. Detailed Product Information

Don’t skimp on product details just because it’s a pre-order. Include comprehensive specifications, ingredients, dimensions, and usage instructions. The more detailed your information, the more confident customers feel pre-ordering something they can’t immediately see or touch.

9. Pre-Order Policy Dropdown:

Add a clear, customer-friendly return policy that addresses pre-order concerns: “Risk-free reservation: cancel anytime before shipping for a full refund.” This removes the final barrier to conversion.

Tool for success

Rather than turning away interested buyers when inventory runs out, pre-orders allow you to continue capturing sales by setting clear expectations about future availability.

Instead of turning eager buyers away, you’re capturing sales, building anticipation, and creating a community of loyal customers.

With the right tools, there are no missed opportunities. Timesact adds the pre-order layer to your Shopify store: customizable pre-order buttons and badges, pre-order and back-in-stock notification emails you switch on and edit in the app, and flexible payment options including a deposit at checkout with the balance collected on a date you set, a set time after checkout or, on the PRO plan, when you fulfill the order.
